Who is more free, the olympic athlete or the couch potato? The guitarist who plays 8 hours a day and has all scales memorized, or the guy who’s fingers obey only two chords? The woman who has learned a dozen languages, or the guy who can barely hold a conversation in one?
“The Trinity is a Mystery!” We hear it said all the time. We believe it most of the time.
As we approach Pentecost, the faithful are being invited to return to Mass under various protocols released by our Bishops. In many ways, this return has been like first Communion a second time. Perhaps an adult version of second grade Sunday School is needed.
I like to think of myself as a manly man, doing carpentry, driving fire trucks, running a triathlon, reading ancient languages, and defending the weak. But, I also recognize that temptation to have a myopic view of my own sexuality as essentially only expressed with 1% of my body surface area.
