Standing Ovation for Small Victory

Although I have been “called” to fill the role as wife and mom, I also have a calling to be a therapist.

For several weeks, I have a front row seat in my patients’ recovery. In this role, my patients trust me to guide them through the steps of physical rehabilitation, which also encompasses emotional and spiritual aspects of their life. Honestly, it’s me who often receives the spiritual gifts from these patients. Witnessing their faith that “God will get them through this” often leaves me speechless.

We often think of VICTORY as a win, defeat or success—a big deal.

However, I have found that it is the small wins and successes that have the greatest impact.  For instance, when a client with a spinal cord injury moves their thumb for the first time, it’s a VICTORY. When an amputee takes their first step with their prosthesis, it’s a VICTORY. Those small VICTORIES deserve a standing ovation.

This is a truly humbling role for me, and although I’m trained to lead my patients in their recovery, it is often them leading me to a greater awareness in my life.  I have many moments when I know, “This is not because of me. This is God’s work.” Many people refer to small moments of grace as “God winks,” and it’s true that these little reminders (moving a finger) lead us to moments of growth in our faith…faith in something much greater than us.

So although we should celebrate our huge VICTORIES in life, let us not forget those small, life changing VICTORIES, which will add up to an even greater celebration in life.
